Board Briefs
Secretary:
Minutes of the May 10th board meeting were accepted as written. The Guild
has received flyers from the Milwaukee Art Museum for upcoming events and
from a new source of kiln-dried wood in Southeast Wisconsin.
Treasurer:
Elizabeth Rohde reported the treasury balance on 6/7/01 was $8,872.24.
She was able to contact Ed Goldman and turn over the financial records
for 2000 for audit.Audits of previous years have been completed. The holiday
party reservations at ZorbaÕs have been reconfirmed.
Programs:
Ken Bahr reported the speaker for October has a conflict with the meeting
date and asked if the meeting date should be moved or a different
speaker sought. The board agreed moving the meeting date would cause too
much confusion. Ken will ask the speaker if she would entertain holding
a Saturday morning workshop/seminar instead. Dick Yezek reported attendance
at the Friday Jeff Jewitt Guild meeting was very low, probably because
of graduations, weddings, etc. this time of year. It was suggested June
be avoided for out of town presenters in the
future if at all possible.
New Business:
Ken reported on an e-mail received from John Petrovic asking the board
to discuss the idea of offering raffle tickets or other compensation for
members donating items for the raffle or auction. The board decided that
donated items would be auctioned, not raffled. The auction sell price
would be used as the basis for the value of the item. One
raffle ticket will be awarded for each $10.00 of value. Raffle tickets
will be identified by a date stamp and must be
used within one year of issue. About two auctions per year will be
held at the early part of the meeting. A minimum bid value will be
set for large dollar items. Donated items must be in good working order
and worth auctioning; no junk.
Another idea John asked the board to discuss was for the Guild
to secure a workbench for use during meetings and workshops. The
same people have been generously donating the use of their benches for
the past few years. The board agreed storage of the bench would have to
be figured out first. The leading idea was to store it inside the stage.
This would require removable legs and some re-engineering of the stage.
Cost of the bench was also discussed.
The next board meeting will be Thursday, July 12th, 7:00 p.m..

Dyes and Stains
Liz Rohde
Our June speaker was no stranger to the guild. This
was Jeff Jewitt's second visit. And he was so popular we had to have
him back.
Jeff is a native of Cleveland, Ohio. He owns and operates
a restoration and finishing shop and Homestead Finishing Products.
He has authored two books on Finishing as well as two videotapes.
Jeff started the program by explaining what the
difference between pigments and dyes are and the best way to apply them.
He talked about color theory. Jeff had some problem when he tried
to draw a divided color pie chart into 6 equal parts. He tried
to blame it on jet lag (but we all know that Ohioans don't have jets because
jets can't land on dirt runways).
There was some discussion about blotching and how
to correct it.
And then the "F" word came up. FINISHING.
Jeff elaborated slightly on how Shellac is produced, how it is "cut" and
the grades it comes in. He also explained the strengths and weaknesses
of other types of finishing products such as lacquer, polyurethane, Danish
oil as well as water-based finishes. He discussed the various ways
a finish is applied and rubbed out.
Through out the program Jeff spoke briefly about
wood preparation such as using scrapers, planes and sandpaper. He
also answered many questions from the audience.
Time may fly when you're having fun, but it
seems to go at the speed of light when you're learning from a good speaker
as Jeff. Where else could you get a speaker like Jeff Jewitt for a $35.00
a year membership?

Guild Highlight for July
Show and Tell
The special event for the month of July is our Annual
Membership - Given Show N Tell Program. This program is usually one
of the high points of the year because it gives each of us an opportunity
to see what the other members have been doing, what kind of projects they
complete, what problems they encounter, and with what solutions they devise.
LetÕs face it, we donÕt have all the time necessary
to learn everything by trial and error. We must learn from others, and
who better to learn from than our own talented fellow Guild members.
If you havenÕt told Ken Bahr what you plan to show
and tell, please contact him promptly so he can put together the offerings
in an organized fashion for our enjoyment.
